The hole in the detachable end piece gives the C note while I had learnt my fingering in another recorder (and a flute) such that the first note is played with my ring finger of the left hand.This was a major change, so I had to seal off the proximal hole (and also the hole at the bottom along with) to retain my older fingering. Tuning is definitely off by about a quarter step but for a learner like me it isn't significant. It's made out of plastic and seems to be very durable.
